Making an Impact - Improving Lives

Community Outreach and Mindfulness

DIY Community Outreach

Providing services to the elderly, infirm, and families struggling through hardship and would not otherwise have access to those services.

Operation

Helping Handyperson

Compassion is our objective; Mindfulness is our mission.  Everyone should have an opportunity to improve their mental wellness every day.

DIY Community Outreach

There are those that say...and those that do.  You know I improve homes and farms, but this is about the last part + improving lives.  As a handyman, father, and husband, time is my most precious resource.  And I am committed to giving some of that time each year to provide compassionate services to those in need.  If there is one thing I learned during my time in the service, we give power to our words through our actions (or inaction) and deeds.

For me personally, a DIY attitude means that I first do things myself before I ask it or seek it out from others.  When I combined my personal DIY mindset with my commitment to serve, I see a larger purpose, where the DIY approach is ideal for meaningful community engagement.  Many disadvantaged communities are reluctant to ask for help.  We take the initiative to seek out those that could use a hand(yman) and we reach out to them.  We take our volunteerism and compassion on the road!

Words have meaning

"Do it yourself" ("DIY") a "self-made-culture"; one of designing, creating, customizing, and repairing items or things without any special training.  It is made up of people like me who enjoy finding solutions to problems (the kids these days call it a life-hack).  For those of us in the professional handyman service, it is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things using the skills we have, critical thinking, and grit.

A community is a social unit (a group of living things) with commonalities such as norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area like a country, village, town, or neighborhood (i.e., Ogden Vally, Utah)

Outreach provides services to any population that might not otherwise have access to those services. A key component of outreach is that the group providing it is not stationary but mobile; in other words, it involves meeting someone in need of an outreach service at the location where they are. Compared with traditional service providers, outreach services are provided closer to where people may reside, efforts are often voluntary, and few, if any, enforceable obligations. Outreach is often meant to fill in the gap in the services provided by mainstream (often governmental) services and is often carried out by non-profit, non-governmental organizations.

Operation Helping Handyperson

This service maximizes mindfulness and healing opportunities for veterans, first responders, and healthcare professionals.  The operation's success is secured by forming a task force of members from high-trauma occupations specifically for this purpose.  Oh, and while achieving this therapeutic aim, we help our community members live better lives.

Ok, so I am a fairly hardened veteran, and the first word has some baggage in the mind of a few or maybe many.  Be assured this operation is about helping those that help others.  Focused on veterans, first responders, and healthcare professionals, but is open to anyone that has experienced a traumatic event and would benefit from volunteer therapy.  No skill of any kind is necessary or needed to participate.

Mindfulness in practice involves developing the skill of bringing one's attention to whatever is happening in the present moment.  All the other things are still there, but helping others seems to be an antidote for the cluttered mind.

Compassion motivates people to go out of their way to help the physical, mental, or emotional pains of another and themselves. Our mission is to practice active compassion in the desire to alleviate another's suffering. Compassion involves allowing ourselves to be moved by suffering and experiencing the motivation to alleviate and prevent it. Its helpfulness defines an act of compassion. The difference between sympathy and compassion is that the former responds to suffering from sorrow and concern while the latter responds with warmth and care.

Volunteer Therapy

Give back to yourself while helping others.  If you or someone you know can benefit from mindfulness and compassion found in helping others, please reach out to me and see what we have planned for any upcoming DIY Community Outreach initiatives and see how you can join the operation.
